2020 Agriculture Day
Join Somerset County on March 20, 2020 to celebrate Agriculture Day! Each year, Somerset County takes part in the celebration of agriculture within the County by educating the public about some of the more popular topics in local farming. This year we are celebrating female farmers in the Somerset County agricultural community and their influential roles throughout history.
Kick off the day by Diving into Agriculture with two events held at the Somerville Library:
At 10am Vilma and Irving Hockenbury will be presenting “Farmers Wear Many Hats”- a look into the roles farmers play far beyond working in their fields. The Hockenbury Family has been farming in Somerset & Hunterdon Counties since the early 1930’s! They will explain how farmers are savvy business owners, entrepreneurs, mechanics, engineers, weather forecasters, and so much more! Join us as we learn about the history of farming in New Jersey from using mules and early equipment, to modern technological advancements; and the great men and women who work magic in the fields of the Garden State!
At 11:30am, Laura DePrado – a member of the SCADB, will be sharing the benefits of gardening through her presentation and interactive event entitled “Hands on Horticulture”. Gardening is good for the skin and good for the soul! There is no need of previous gardening experience as it is a gardening experience for all! Come join us for this multi-sensory, hands on activity! You can decorate your own pot and plant a seed for your home! There 50 spots available for participants to take home a potted plant, first come first served.
This year, join us as we celebrate the anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage movement; highlighting the impact women have had in shaping agriculture today! The SCADB will be hosting Influencing Agriculture at 5pm in the Farm Barn Atrium at Duke Farms. Join Somerset County as we celebrate agricultural history as seen through the eyes of three local female farmers. Join us as our guest speakers share their stories, and some history of farming in our community!
Join us as Somerset County goes hog-wild for agriculture during our Dive into Agriculture morning events, and our Influencing Agriculture evening presentation!
