County Bridge No. E0203 carries Orchard Road over a tributary to Bedens Brook in the township of Montgomery, approximately 0.2 miles east from the intersection with Opossum Road. The existing bridge is a single-span multi-steel stringer and masonry jack arch supported on masonry abutments widened with a reinforced concrete pipe added as an extension to the south (downstream). The carried roadway is 10.5’ lane westbound and 11.75’ lane eastbound.
The overall condition of this bridge is poor due to the advanced deterioration of the superstructure, with the steel stringers exhibiting excessive delamination and corrosion and brick masonry jack arches between the stringers exhibiting heavy efflorescence with stalactites indicating water seepage through the roadway to the underside of structure. Also, the existing masonry abutments exhibit cracking with heavy efflorescence.
The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of the bridge by complete replacement of the existing structure. The new bridge will be a precast concrete box culvert with cast-in-place concrete wingwalls. The new structure will include a reinforced concrete parapet with stone veneer and bluestone cap on the south side and a stone veneered headwall with beam guide rail on the north side. The roadway over the bridge will be widened to 28’, to accommodate 12’ travel lanes and 4’ shoulder on the eastbound side, and an extended sidewalk on the south side from the Rock Brook School.
This project is funded by FY2017 County Aid from NJDOT.
