Project Description

County Bridge No. F1303 carries Meeker Road over Mine Brook in the Borough of Bernardsville.  The existing bridge is a single-span, pre-stressed concrete voided slab beam superstructure with bituminous overlay supported by concrete abutments.  The existing bridge roadway provides for two lanes of traffic (one in each direction) with a 30 foot clear roadway width and a 5 foot wide sidewalk along the southbound lane.  The bridge is considered to be structurally deficient due to low inventory and operating ratings, poor condition of the superstructure, and scouring of the abutments. This bridge is also currently posted for 20 tons due to the low inventory and operating ratings for the interior pre-stressed beams.  The sufficiency rating for this bridge is a low 32.3 out of 100 and the structure is also classified as being scour critical.

The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of the bridge and eliminate the structural deficiency and scour critical classifications with a single span, pre-cast concrete arch frame.  The existing roadway pavement width at the bridge will remain at 30 feet.  The existing sidewalk on the bridge will be eliminated since it does not connect to an existing or planned pedestrian system on the approaches.  The bridge parapet will consist of concrete pylons with galvanized steel 4-bar railing and posts.  The bridge fascia will have a colored stained and stone textured formliner finish.  Stream scour countermeasures will also be installed.

This project is funded by FY2018 Local Bridge Future Needs grant funding from the NJDOT.
