Project Description

County Bridge No. G1403 carries Lloyd Road over a tributary to Indian Grove Brook in the borough of Bernardsville, approximately 0.5 miles northeast of the intersection with Mendham Road and 0.3 miles southwest of the intersection with Hardscrabble Road.  The existing structure, built in 1928, is a single span, reinforced concrete slab.   The bridge spans 22’± on the skew, with a 20’ clear roadway width to allow for 1 lane of traffic in both directions.  The overall condition of the bridge is poor due to the condition of the superstructure and low inventory rating.  The bridge superstructure exhibits spalls with heavily exposed rusted rebar on the underside.

The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of the bridge by complete replacement of the existing structure.  The new bridge will be a precast, 3 sided frame concrete structure with reinforced concrete wingwalls and parapets with stone veneer.  The bridge will be constructed to meet existing conditions of the current roadway, 22' edge-of-pavement to edge-of-pavement with 3' grass berms on each side.  During the design phase, measures were incorporated to preserve the character defining historic elements of the existing bridge, such as use of natural stone and the arched parapets with stone pylons.

This project is funded by FY2016 Local Bridges, Future Needs grant from NJDOT.
