Project Description

County Bridge No. F1105 carries Liberty Corner Road over Dead river in the Township of Bernards.  Constructed in 1935, the existing structure is a two-span reinforced concrete slab bridge with bituminous overlay supported by reinforced concrete abutments and concrete pier.  The bridge features an open window balustrade rail on both sides of the bridge.  The existing bridge carries two (2) 11-foot travel lanes in each direction, with approximately 36 feet of clear roadway width with no existing sidewalks.  The latest inspection of this bridge classified its superstructure condition as poor.  As a result of the poor condition of the superstructure, the bridge has been posted for 14 tons.  The bridge has also been classified as scour critical.

The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity and eliminate the scour critical description of the existing structure.  The proposed bridge will consist of two (2) single-span 3 sided precast frames with concrete deck riding surface.  The bridge will be widened to accommodate a concrete sidewalk at the south side of the road.  The roadway width of 36 feet will remain the same.  The existing balustrade will be replaced with concrete parapet with stone veneer, and guiderail will be constructed to match current highway standards.  The concrete substructure will be constructed with scour countermeasures.

This project is funded by a FY2018 NJDOT Local Bridge Future Needs grant.
