Replacement of County Bridge No. H0814, Hawthorne Avenue over Tributary to Green Brook, Township of Bridgewater
This project’s construction contract was awarded to State Line Construction, Inc. on December 10, 2019. The Pre-Construction Meeting was held on June 16, 2020.
[UPDATE 7-20-2020] The Hawthorne Avenue Bridge, located approximately 300 feet from the intersection with Mountain Avenue/CR 527, was fully closed to vehicular and pedestrian/bicycle traffic, as of Monday, July 20, 2020 at 9AM, for the bridge replacement work. The Project Location Map can be viewed here.
A detour route is posted along Mountain Avenue and Willow Street. Local access to residential driveways will be maintained. Construction is anticipated for 3 months. The Detour Plan can be viewed here.
County Bridge No. H0814 carries Hawthorne Avenue over a tributary to Green Brook in the Township of Bridgewater. It is located approximately 300 feet from the intersection of Hawthorne and Mountain Avenue (CR 527). The existing bridge is a single span, simply supported structure with rolled steel stringers encased in a reinforced concrete deck slab supported by two concrete abutments. The existing roadway carries two lanes for a 30’ total roadway width, which includes approximately 13’ lanes each direction with 5’8” sidewalks and concrete open-window balustrades on both sides.
The overall condition of the bridge is fair due to low inventory ratings and superstructure condition. The superstructure rating is fair due to a large hole in the slab previously repaired with steel plate and large spalls exposing the bottom flange of the steel stringers. Rusting and lamination of the exposed stringers has also been observed. The existing substructure also exhibits severe delamination of the east abutment breast wall.
The purpose of this project is restoring structural capacity of the bridge via complete replacement of the existing structure. The new bridge will be a precast concrete rigid frame with precast concrete open-window balustrade and cast in place pylons. The existing roadway width and geometry will remain the same. The project will also include construction of new concrete sidewalk and associated roadway improvements.
This project is funded by FY2018 Local Bridge Future Needs grant funding from the NJDOT.
