Rehabilitation of Bridge No. G0803 Finderne Avenue (CR 633)
Township of Bridgewater

Construction Announcement

Somerset County Bridge No. G0803 on Finderne Avenue (CR 633), located between Union Avenue (Rt 28) and Foothill Road (near Rt 22), will be under construction for the next 9 months.  The new bridge will be reconstructed in three (3) separate stages, with one lane northbound and one lane southbound being maintained, with the exception of intermittent single-day closures as required by the work.  Pedestrian traffic will be maintained throughout the project.

On Tuesday, February 20, 2018, Stage 1 traffic control will be implemented at the center portion of Finderne Avenue, to allow for the demolition and replacement of the center portion of the existing bridge.  Through traffic northbound/southbound will utilize the right lanes in each direction;  motorists should follow the posted signs through the construction zone.  The duration of Stage 1 construction (center work zone) will be approximately 3 months.

On Thursday, April 26, 2018, Stage 2 traffic control will be implemented on Finderne Avenue to allow for the demolition and replacement of the west portion of the existing bridge.  Single lane through traffic northbound and southbound will continue to be maintained in both directions; motorists should follow the posted signs through the construction zone.  Pedestrian traffic will continue to be maintained throughout the project.  The duration of Stage 2 construction (west portion work zone) will last approximately 3 months.

On Wednesday, June 20, 2018, Stage 3 traffic control will be implemented on Finderne Avenue to allow for the demolition and replacement of the east portion of the existing bridge.  Single lane through traffic northbound and southbound will continue to be maintained in both directions; motorists should follow the posted signs through the construction zone.  Pedestrian traffic will continue to be maintained throughout the project.  The duration of Stage 3 construction (east portion work zone) will last approximately 3 months.

The County will continue to provide updates during construction to provide advance notice for the various staged traffic shifts and off-peak daytime detour schedules.

As part of the final work for the new bridge deck construction and roadway milling/paving operations, a full road closure between Union Avenue (Rt 28) and Foothill Road (near Rt 22) will be required.  A posted detour will be implemented during off-peak daytime hours between 9AM and 3PM.  Weather permitting, the following days  are scheduled for full road closures:

  • Friday, September 14 -- milling & paving complete
  • Monday, September 17  -- concrete deck slab grooving complete
  • Wednesday, September 19  --  traffic striping complete, all four (4) lanes reopened to traffic

As of Wednesday, September 19, 2018, all staged traffic control devices were removed from the project area and all four lanes and both sidewalks are now reopened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, respectively.  Remaining items of work will be done off the roadway or with minimal, intermittent impact to traffic.

Project Summary

County Bridge No. G0803, carrying Finderne Avenue (CR 633) over Cuckels Brook, is a single span prestressed concrete adjacent voided slab structure, with latex modified concrete as wearing surface, approximately 30 feet long along the centerline of the roadway, constructed in 1969 with the center portions of abutments constructed in 1929.  The bridge carries four (4) lanes of traffic (two in each direction) with ADT of 18,447 based on NJDOT Traffic Count taken in 2012.  The project's location is shown here.

This project will consist of rehabilitation of the substructures, design of scour protection measures and replacement of the superstructure.  The new superstructure for Bridge G0803 will consist of hot-dipped galvanized steel stringers with a composite reinforced concrete deck.  The superstructure depth will match the existing, the bridge roadway cross section and roadway profile will also match existing geometry.

The purpose of this project is to extend the service life of this structure by complete replacement of the existing superstructure and rehabilitation of the substructure and to also eliminate the scour critical classification by installing a designed scour countermeasure in the streambed.  Funding for this project is through NJDOT's Local Bridges, Future Needs grant program (FY2015).
