This project’s construction contract was awarded to CMS Construction, Inc. on January 14, 2020.  The Pre-Construction Meeting was held on June 23, 2020.

The Douglas Road Bridge, located approximately 400 feet south of the intersection with Mine Brook Road, is now fully closed to vehicular and pedestrian/bicycle traffic, as of Monday, July 27, 2020  9:30AM for the bridge replacement work and utility relocation efforts.  The Project Location Map can be viewed here.

A detour route is posted along Mine Brook Road, Somerville Road, and Liberty Corner Road (CR 512) .  Local access to residential driveways will be maintained.  Construction is anticipated for 4 months.  The Detour Plan can be viewed here.

Project Description

County Bridge No. F1201 carries Douglas Road over tributary to Dead River in the Township of Bernards and Borough of Far Hills.  The existing bridge is a single-span concrete slab with embedded structural steel I-beams superstructure supported on concrete abutments.  The existing 8 ft span bridge provides a two-lane, one in each direction, 20.3 ft clear roadway width.  The structure is in serious condition due to the condition of the superstructure and substructure. The superstructure is in serious condition due to severe corrosion of steel I-beams with up to 50% section loss. The substructure is in serious condition due to severe scaling and undermining at both abutments.  The structure is classified as Structurally Deficient due to serious condition of both superstructure and substructure.  The structure is also classified as Functional Obsolete due to inadequate deck geometry.  Temporary concrete barriers were installed as the stone and pipe rail bridge rails were recently destroyed by two separate vehicle impacts.

The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of the bridge and eliminating the structural deficient and functional obsolete classifications with a single span, precast concrete rigid frame.  The roadway pavement width at the bridge will be widened from 20 ft to 24 ft and curb to curb width of 32 ft, to comply with NJDOT standards.

This project is funded by FY2019 Local Bridge Future Needs grant funding from the NJDOT.
