Replacement of County Bridge No. C0302, Hollow Road over Tributary to Rock Brook, Township of Montgomery

Construction Announcement

This project’s construction contract was awarded to Kalogridis Contracting, Inc. on January 9, 2018.  The Pre-Construction Meeting was held on June 4, 2018.

The Hollow Road Bridge, located approximately 0.2 mile south of the intersection of Grandview Road, will be fully closed to vehicular and pedestrian/bicycle traffic during construction, starting on August 6, 2018 for approximately 4 ½ months.

A detour route will be posted along Grandview Road, Fairview Road and Camp Meeting Avenue.  Local access will still be maintained.  The Project Location Map with Detour Route can be viewed here

UPDATE [4-3-2019]:  The roadway was reopened to traffic on Wednesday, April 3, 2019.

During excavation work for the north footings, an unanticipated utility conflict was encountered.  On September 7, 2018, it was determined that work was unable to proceed any further until the utility conflict was evaluated and the utility relocated by the various utility providers.  All utility relocation work was completed and bridge construction work resumed on November 12, 2018.  Bridge construction work will continue as winter season allows, and roadway reconstruction work will be completed as soon as weather permits, which is estimated to be April 2019.  During such time, Hollow Road will have to remain closed to all traffic and the posted detour will remain in effect.  Updated will be posted as work progresses and as the spring season begins.  [Posted 11-26-2018]

Project Description

County Bridge No. C0302 carries Hollow Road over a tributary to Rock Brook in the township of Montgomery, approximately 0.2 miles south from the intersection with Grandview Road.  The existing bridge, built in 1934, is a two span, continuous reinforced concrete slab on concrete abutments and center pier.  The existing structure spans 43’ and provides two lanes (one in each direction) with a 28’ clear roadway width.  The overall physical condition of the structure is fair due to the condition of the superstructure and substructure, which exhibit spalls with exposed reinforcement and cracks with heavy efflorescence.  The structure is in poor condition due to low inventory ratings, and is currently posted for a 10 ton load restriction.

The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of the bridge by complete replacement of the existing structure.  The new bridge will be a cast-in-place reinforced concrete rigid frame on cast-in-place concrete footings and wingwalls.  The new structure will include reinforced concrete parapets with stone veneer and concrete caps.  The roadway will be widened to 32’, to accommodate 11’ travel lanes and 5’ shoulders.

This project is funded by FY2016 and FY2017 County Aid from NJDOT.

Public Information Meeting

A public information meeting in regards to this project was held on March 15, 2017.  The purpose of this meeting was to inform local residents, officials, and the general public of Somerset County’s proposed plans to replace the Hollow Road Bridge over Rock Brook.  The information meeting allows the public an opportunity to examine the concept plans for the project and make comments.  The final bridge replacements plans include:
