The Borough of Bernardsville received a grant from Somerset County for installation of a synthetic turf field at the ‘Polo Grounds’ Borough parkland. The grant comes from the Recreational Grants program established in 2008 by the Board of Chosen Freeholders which provides municipalities up to a $1,000,000 grant for the development of recreational facilities. The primary purpose of this Program is to redirect a percentage of open space dollars toward recreational upgrades to municipalities that cannot otherwise benefit from the Funds through open space acquisitions. The concept of field improvements not only helps expand recreational capacity in the municipalities, but also creates a means for residents to benefit from their open-space taxes, when there is minimal land left in those communities to preserve. The grant to Bernardsville requires a 30% match to the funds allocated by Somerset County.
The proposed project will replace the existing upper field used by Pop Warner football with a synthetic turf multipurpose field that will support the playing of football, soccer, girls and boys lacrosse. Additionally, a softball field will be installed off of the sideline of the main field, also of synthetic turf. Other site improvements include goal posts, fences, walkways, driveways, and improved site drainage. A rendering of the field is provided below.
The project will be bid in the spring 2017 with construction scheduled for the summer of 2017.
