Of all the County Clerk’s many duties, one of the happiest is the ability to officiate at wedding ceremonies. If you would like the Clerk to officiate at your wedding, please refer to the following guidelines:


Wedding ceremonies are conducted at the Somerset County Administration Building, 20 Grove St., Somerville, NJ 08876


Wedding are conducted by appointment only.  E-mail or call 908-231-7013 to schedule your ceremony. Weddings are generally scheduled Tuesdays and Fridays, depending on the Clerk’s availability.

If you cannot make it to your scheduled appointment, please call as soon as possible.


The County Clerk can conduct ceremonies in several languages, including Spanish. Please inquire when scheduling your wedding.


The County Clerk is pleased to provide this service free of charge. However, there are fees for obtaining a marriage license and certificate (see below).


You must apply for and obtain a marriage license at least 72 hours before your ceremony. The fee for a marriage license is $28.00.  If both applicants are New Jersey residents, the license can be obtained from the municipality in which either one of the applicants lives. If only one of the applicants is a New Jersey resident, the license must be obtained from the municipality where that applicant lives. Please contact your local municipal offices (township or borough hall) for details. If neither spouse is a New Jersey resident, the couple must apply in the municipality where the ceremony will take place – if you are being married by the Somerset County Clerk, you must apply for your license at Somerville Borough Hall. 


You may park for free in the County parking deck (entrance on High Street). Take the stairs or the elevator to the Green Level to enter the Administration Building. Proceed to the County Clerk’s Office (Election Division).

Bring your marriage license with you to the ceremony.

You may bring two witnesses and other guests to be a part of your ceremony. If you do not have witnesses, we can provide them for you. If you expect to have a large wedding party, kindly notify us ahead of time so we can make arrangements for the appropriate room.


The County Clerk will file your license with the Borough of Somerville for processing. In about five days, you may obtain a certified copy of the marriage certificate from Somerville Borough Hall. Please contact them for hours and fees at 908-725-2300 x 1980.
