NOTARY PUBLIC REQUIREMENTS - In order to be eligible to obtain your Notary Public from this office, you must reside or work in Somerset County. You may become a Notary Public by submitting an application and a check for $25.00 (payable to: New Jersey Treasurer) to one of your NJ State Legislators. Request your Legislator to sign your Notary Application and forward it along with the check you provided directly to the NJ Notary Public Division in Trenton on your behalf. You may also apply to become a Notary online by clicking the link below. Once you receive your Notary Commission Certificate, you must appear in person to the Somerset County Clerk's Office to take your oath. This must occur within 90 days from your Commission Date or your Commission will not be valid. There is a $15.00 fee to be sworn in. Please note that you may not notarize until you have been sworn in with our office.
NOTARY PUBLIC RENEWALS & CHANGES - Your commission is valid for 5 years. After 5 years, you must follow the exact procedure as described above to renew your Notary Public. If you change your name or address, you must file a name or address change form with both the state and the county that holds your commission. There is an additional $25.00 fee for the name changes.
