Part V.  Personal Statement and Photo

Leadership Somerset asks each applicant to provide a personal statement and photo.  If you are selected for the program, your statement and photo will appear in the Class Directory, along with a summary of your contact information.  Only members of Leadership Somerset receive the directory.

This information is not used to evaluate your application; we only consider the information you provide in Parts I through III.

25

Please write a brief personal statement of 60 words or less.  Write it in first person, let your personality shine through, and remember you are more than a degree you have earned or your title at work.  In other words, we're not looking for your professional bio or something you'd write for a LinkedIn profile.

A sample 60-word personal statement follows:

I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and volunteer at our animal shelter.  I also love crossword puzzles, old movie classics, and murder mystery books.  I'm a terrible cook but I know lots of good restaurants in this area.  I also have trouble saying no and ended up chairing 2 committees in my town.

Please only upload .JIF, .JPG, or .PNG file types.

Part VI.  Program Fee

The program fee for participating in the Leadership Somerset Class of 2020 is $375.  Do not send the program fee until you are asked to do so.  For planning purposes, the fee is due in its entirety by December 31, 2019.  Leadership Somerset is unable to accept credit card payments, therefore payment must be by check, purchase order, or money order.

Partial scholarship assistance based on need may be available if you are selected to participate.  Scholarship support pays up to half of the program fee; the applicant is responsible for  the remainder of the program fee.  After applicants are selected, scholarship information will be sent to all selected applicants.  Scholarship need is not considered during review of applications.

Leadership Somerset does not have an application fee.  Our program fee is significantly less than comparable programs because of the commitment and support of the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders.  Staff support and the other program costs are provided in-kind by the county.

Part VII.  Application Submission, Deadline, and Notification

All applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2019.  Applicants will be notified by email of their status no later than December 1.   Please note that we do not begin making decisions on applications until the application period has closed.

We suggest you add leadershipsomerset@co.somerset.nj.us to your safe senders list.  Should your email address change at any point after you submit your application, please let us know by emailing us at leadershipsomerset@co.somerset.nj.us.

Part VIII.  Commitment

Leadership Somerset is a yearlong program, taking place one weekday a month.  Each session is a full day (plan 8 AM to 5 PM).  Program fellows are expected to attend all sessions.  The tentative calendar for the 2020 program year is:

January 8 (attendance at this first session is mandatory to continue in the program)
February 12
March 11
April 8
May 13
June 10
July 8
August 5
September 9
October 14
November 18
December 2

Program fellows may miss no more than one and one half sessions to officially graduate.

Leadership Somerset program fellows are expected to participate in and complete several projects, including one major class project, which will require time outside of class sessions to plan and complete.   Program fellows are also provided with pre-work (readings that can take an hour or two of preparation time before each session).

Because of these commitments, applicants must have the support and commitment of their employer.

27

By typing my name below I demonstrate an understanding of the requirements of Leadership Somerset and hereby commit to the time involved and will fully participate in this program and the class project.

I further demonstrate my understanding of the requirement that my employer (if applicable) supports and has agreed to my participation in this year-long commitment.
