Franklin Township, NJ
August 7, 2018 - NEWS RELEASE
Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson, Chief of County Detectives John W. Fodor, and Franklin Township Chief of Police, Richard Grammar announced the arrest of Dupre J. McCalla, age 45, of Pear Tree Lane, Franklin Park, New Jersey.
Prosecutor Robertson stated that on August 4, 2018, at approximately 1:49 P.M., the Franklin Township Police Department received a 9-1-1 call about an armed robbery that occurred at the Wawa in Franklin Township. Upon responding to the scene, Franklin Township Police officers learned that a male had entered the gas attendant booth and attempted to take cash from the register. When defendant McCalla was discovered in the booth, an employee entered the booth and confronted him. Defendant McCalla then brandished a knife and the employee backed out, closing the door of the booth to hold the defendant inside. While defendant McCalla tried to escape, he dropped both the money and the knife. When defendant McCalla was eventually able to open the door, he picked up the knife and a handful of money and fled the area. It was reported that $440.00 was stolen from the cash register in the gas attendant booth. An employee advised the police as to which direction the defendant fled.
Franklin Township Police patrol officers located an individual matching the description of the defendant in the same area in which he fled. The officers approached McCalla and he provided them with a false name. McCalla was subsequently identified as the individual who robbed the Wawa and was taken into custody. The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit responded and continued the investigation with the Franklin Township Police Department Detective Bureau.
Franklin Township Police officers recovered $105.00 in U.S. currency from defendant McCalla. The victim sustained minor abrasions and wrist pain from attempting to hold the attendant booth door closed.
Defendant McCalla was charged with 1st Degree Robbery, 3rd degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and 4th degree Hindering Apprehension. Defendant McCalla was subsequently lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.
