New Chaplain Appointed to Sheriff's Office

Somerset County Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano recently welcomed the Rev. Joseph Lugo as chaplain of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Father Lugo was sworn in June 7 by Superior Court Judge Michael J. Rogers at the Somerset County Historic Courthouse. Father Lugo is a longtime resident of the Bradley Gardens section of Bridgewater. He attended Boston College, Mount Saint Mary College and Seton Hall University and received his bachelor’s degree in 1956. He received a master’s degree in psychology from Seton Hall in 1967 and a master of divinity degree from Seton Hall in 1980. He has held teaching assignments at the United States Air Force Academy, College of Saint Elizabeth, Bayley-Ellard High School and Immaculate Conception Seminary.

Father Lugo has performed his duties as chaplain at many military bases throughout the world.  His chaplaincies include instruction in substance abuse, individual counseling, personal issues counseling, crisis intervention and referrals.

His clerical affiliations include Holy Rosary Church in Dover, St. James Church in Totowa, St. Joseph Church in Paterson, Holy Family Church in Florham Park, St. Lawrence Church in Chester, Sacred Heart Church in New Brunswick, College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, Bayley-Ellard High School in Madison and Saint Madeline’s Church in Flemington.

“It is an honor to add Father Lugo’s services to our organization,” Sheriff Provenzano said.  “He will be there in the event emergencies arise for our officers and civilian staff, at our bi-annual swearing-in ceremonies, and for any other occasions such as spiritual needs, counseling and religious program management.”
