BOROUGH OF SOMERVILLE

Did You Know…?

In the winter of 1778-1779, more than half of George Washington’s troops were quartered at nearby Middlebrook.  During this time, General Washington and his wife, Martha, stayed in Somerville at John Wallace’s newly constructed house.  Today the Wallace House is registered as a State Historic Site.  Somerville was chosen as the county seat after a raiding party led by British Col. John Simcoe in 1779 burned the county’s courthouse located in Millstone.  In 1893, Somerville was the second town in Somerset County to be supplied with electrical power.  Somerville is the site of the Somerset County Historic Courthouse and the Somerset Medical Center, a major regional medical center.  The Borough of Somerville is 2.4 square miles with a population of 12,423.  Learn More…
