BOROUGH OF RARITAN

Did You Know…?

General John Frelinghuysen, an attorney who served as a brigadier general during the War of 1812 and later was Somerset County surrogate, owned a home in Raritan.  The house currently serves as the Raritan Public Library. The Raritan Woolen Mills, one of the largest employers in the area with about 400 workers, made uniforms for Union soldiers during the Civil War, and as the Somerset Manufacturing Company, produced blankets and coats for European armies during WWI.  President Warren Harding signed the Knox-Porter Resolution, the treaty that officially ended WWI, at the home of Senator Joseph Frelinghuysen in Raritan on July 2, 1921.  Raritan was also home to Sgt. John Basilone, the only enlisted Marine in WWII to receive the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross and the Purple Heart.  A Basilone parade is held each year in his honor.  Learn More…
