BOROUGH OF NORTH PLAINFIELD Did You Know…? Long before it was called "North Plainfield," the town was referred to as "Blue Hills" and was part of Warren Township. In 1850, the Central Railroad of New Jersey connected North Plainfield with New York City. The coming of the railroad transformed this rural community. North Plainfield became the site of country homes for middle-class urban dwellers and of grand estates or “gentlemen” farms of the more well to do. In 1872, North Plainfield became an independent township, which at that time included current-day North Plainfield, Watchung and Green Brook. Today, the Borough of North Plainfield is a 2.9 square mile area at the base of New Jersey’s Watchung Mountains with a population of 21,103. Learn More…
