TOWNSHIP OF MONTGOMERY

Did You Know…?

The 32.26 square miles of land called Montgomery Township was named after General Brigadier Richard Montgomery.  By 1750, there were about 70 households in Montgomery, nearly all of which were farms.  Farmsteads in the township were as large as 200 or 300 acres.  In the period between 1776 and 1783, General Washington spent considerable time around this area during the Revolutionary War and frequently visited his friend, John Van Horne, at his manor house just west of present Montgomery Avenue.  Located in the southern tip of Somerset County, the township contains several hamlets, including Belle Mead, Blawenburg, Dutchtown, Harlingen, Rocky Hill, Skillman and Zion.  Learn More…
