Manville, a 2.5 square mile area with a population of 10,343, is located on the Raritan River.  Manville has historically been an urban community in the midst of farmland. The community was named for the Johns-Manville Company, which built a plant in the area in 1912.   Johns-Manville became the largest asbestos-producing company in the world.  The borough gained its independence in 1929.  In the 20^th century, Manville attracted large numbers of immigrants and other urban workers looking for employment.
