TOWNSHIP OF FRANKLIN

Did You Know…?

Franklin Township was named for either Benjamin Franklin or his son, William Franklin, who was the Royal Governor of New Jersey.  The development of communities within Franklin Township was closely tied with the development of transportation systems in the area.  The opening of the Delaware-Raritan Canal in 1834 was particularly significant. Twenty-two miles of the continuous water route from New York to Philadelphia runs through the Township. During the Civil War, up to 200,000 tons of freight were hauled by mule and horse-drawn barges, a great economic boon for the area. The building of the railroads led to the decline of this once successful mode of transportation.  Learn More…
