BOROUGH OF Far Hills Did You Know…? In 1873, Far Hills had 42 residents, 3 sawmills, a gristmill, a brush block factory and a limekiln. New York broker and real estate developer, Evander Schley, was instrumental in making the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad extend to the area in 1887. With the railroad line passing through, Far Hills proved to be ideal place to sell estates to the affluent. The borough remained mostly rural, consisting of farms and estates of the urban wealthy. Far Hills, which separated from Bernards Township in 1921, is currently 4.9 square miles and has a population of 899. Far Hills is home to the Leonard J. Buck Garden and the Far Hills Race Meeting Association’s Annual Steeplechase Races at Moorland Farms. More than 50,000 spectators converge each fall on Moorland Farms to see the steeplechase races. Far Hills also hosts the Visiting Nurse Association’s semi-annual Rummage Sale - New Jersey’s largest and oldest rummage sale.
