BERNARDS TOWNSHIP

Did You Know…?

Bernards Township contains the following communities: Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner, Lyons and West Millington.  During the Revolutionary War, Major-General Charles Lee, second-in-command to Gen. Washington, was captured in Basking Ridge.   Lee’s troops were lodged at Vealtown (present-day Bernardsville), while the general spent the night at Widow White’s inn in nearby Basking Ridge.  A British force of about 25 dragoons captured Lee at the inn.  He was later exchanged for a British officer.

To the southwest of Basking Ridge is the village of Liberty Corner, known as Annin’s Corner until the Revolution.  It became known as Liberty Corner because the Colonial Army’s supply route from Bound Brook to Morristown ran through the village.   Learn More…
