BEDMINSTER TOWNSHIP

Did You Know…?

Bedminster, located in the rolling hills of northern Somerset County, is primarily known for its farms, stables, and private estates.  Early in the Revolution, British cavalry made raids on the village of Pluckemin in Bedminster Township.  Following the Battle of Princeton, the Continental Army stayed in the village before continuing on to their winter quarters at Morristown.  During the winter of 1778-79, Washington’s Artillery Corps lay in winter encampment at Pluckemin.  General Knox, commander of the Corps, was quartered at the VanderVeer house, a mile north of the village.

By the end of the 19th century, wealthy families from New York City, attracted by the beauty of the area, built expansive estates for enjoyment of the country life.  Initially these estates served as weekend and summer residences.  By the beginning of the 20th century, many of these estates became year-round homes.  Learn More…
