MOUNTAIN AVE (CR 642) PEDESTRIAN SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS BETWEEN SOMERSET ST AND U.S. ROUTE 22 LOCATED IN THE BOROUGH OF NORTH PLAINFIELD, COUNTY OF SOMERSET, STATE OF NEW JERSEY, CONTRACT NO. 15017, STATE JOB NO. 7214307, FEDERAL PROJECT NO. HSP-C00S(595)
The project is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 18. Working hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday - Friday.
A significant vehicular and pedestrian related crash history exists on Mountain Ave (CR 642) between Somerset Street and U.S. Route 22 in the Borough of North Plainfield, Somerset County. The County Engineer has determined that improvements to the pedestrian facilities will reduce crashes along this segment of roadway.
The Mountain Avenue corridor has experienced 10 pedestrian and bicycle related crashes from 2007 to 2012. The crashes do not occur at a single location, but are spread throughout the corridor; indicating a systematic improvement is required to improve pedestrian / bicycle safety.
The proposed improvements consist of pedestrian improvements at each of the intersections along the corridor to provide safe, well-marked crossings. High visibility ‘continental style‘ crosswalks will be installed along with pedestrian signage at key locations. Sidewalk curb ramps will be upgraded to meet current ADA requirements and the pedestrian indications at the two signalized intersections along the corridor will be upgraded to countdown timers in conjunction with signal upgrades for ADA compliance. A striped shoulder will be provided to narrow the travel lane, and no parking areas at intersections will be striped to ensure proper sight distances are available for both cars and pedestrians.
The project is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 18. Working hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday - Friday. Mountain Avenue will continue to have full access to traffic; however, on-street parking will not be available on sections of Mountain Avenue during the construction period.
