Replacement of County Bridge No. C0606 on South Branch Road (CR 567) over Pleasant Run in Branchburg Township
South Branch Road (CR 567) will be closed to starting on July 6, 2016, just north of the intersection with Pleasant Run Road (CR 629) for the replacement of County Bridge C0606. This segment of road will remain fully closed for a period of approximately four (4) months. A detour will be implemented directing traffic to Pleasant Run Road (CR 567) / Picket Place (CR 567), then to River Road / Opie Road / River Road (CR 625), then to Studdiford Drive (CR 606), then to South Branch Road (CR 567). The Project Location Map with Detour Route can be viewed here.
Status Update: This construction project is funded by NJDOT Local Bridges Future Needs grant monies through the State's Transportation Trust Fund. Per the NJDOT Shutdown Order, all work was suspended indefinitely as of Friday, July 8, 2016 until further notice.
Status Update 5/22/2017: Following the NJDOT’s Order to restart TTF funded projects, the contractor remobilized and restarted work at the end of December 2016. Work will continue through the winter as weather permits. Concrete deck, concrete approach slabs and hot mix asphalt roadwork will continue in the spring. The project’s new completion date is on or before June 14, 2017.
Status Update 6/12/2017: South Branch Road Bridge is now open to traffic.
County Bridge No. C0606 carries South Branch Road (CR 567) over Pleasant Run in Branchburg Township, located just north of the intersection with Pleasant Run Road. The bridge was original built in 1924 and in 1981 the bridge’s superstructure was replaced with glued laminated timber stringers, transverse timber deck panels, and timber railings. The current overall condition of the structure is poor due to the condition of the original concrete substructure, which exhibits severe scaling in the breastwall with large area of unsound concrete along the base of the wall. The bridge is classified as structurally deficient due to the condition of the substructure and functional obsolete due to the substandard deck geometry.
The purpose of this project is to restore the structural capacity of the bridge by complete replacement of the existing structure with a single span, multi-stringer steel beam superstructure with reinforced concrete deck, supported on concrete abutments. The new bridge railing will consist of a 4-bar steel railing with concrete end pylons. The roadway width across the bridge will be widened to 36' clear to provide two 12’-0” lanes with 6’-0” shoulders. The widened roadway width at the new bridge will tie into the intersection of South Branch Rd (CR 567) and Pleasant Run Rd (CR 629) at the south approach. The proposed bridge replacement will remove the bridge from the Structurally Deficient, Functional Obsolete and Scour Critical lists.
