Hazardous Materials Courses


These are all of the hazardous material courses that have been offered by the SCESTA over the years, detailing the description, prerequisites and equipment needed.  To see which ones will be offered in upcoming months, follow the link to Upcoming Training Courses.  If you see a course below that is not being offered in the upcoming months, call us to see if you can arrange a contract class for your department to be held at the Academy or your station.


Hazardous Materials Awareness (8 hours)

Course Number: 01601-12

Description: This is the basic course in the Hazardous Materials training series. Instruction covers identification of Haz-Mat problems, gathering basic information on the nature of the incident, and those reporting requirements necessary to begin the mitigation process.

Hazardous Materials Operations (8 hours)

Course Number: 01602-12

Description: Haz-Mat Operations is the second course in this series. You will learn how to provide information on the physical properties of hazardous materials and to enable participants to predict the likely behavior of a substance during a release. The class will contain instruction on the use of PPE; response to overexposure of injury, basic decontamination, basic control techniques; termination procedures. All students must take a written test and pass with a 70%.

Weapons of Mass Destruction-Awareness-Level 1 (4 hours)

Course Number: 01616-12

Description: At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the role of Level I trained responders in dealing with a Chemical, Biologic, Radiological, Nuclear or Explosive (CBRNE) attack. To review some recent history and point out that these CBRNE weapons have been used, including the Tokyo Subway attack in March 1995. To recognize the signs and symptoms of CBRNE poisoning because these frequently will be the first indication of an attack. To describe the proper initial response actions for emergency responders at either a suspected or actual CBRNE incident site.

Weapons of Mass Destruction-Operations-Level II (4 hours)

Course Number: 01617-12

Description: At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the role of Level II trained responders in dealing with a Chemical, Biologic, Radiological, Nuclear, or Explosive (CBRNE) attack. The purpose of this course is to train you the Domestic Preparedness Operations Level. These classes are designed to increase the depth of knowledge of responders confronted with the challenges created when a terrorist incident involves the employment of Chemical, Biological, radiological, Nuclear or Explosive (CBRNE) attack. Identify the correct operations level defensive actions to be taken in the event of a terrorist deploying a CBRNE agent. Identify appropriate personal protective equipment. Select appropriate detection and identification equipment that might be employed in response to deployment of a CBRNE agent. Understand emergency decontamination procedures that can be employed at the Operations Level.

Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings-Awareness (4 hours)

Description: This is an awareness level course designed to provide basic instruction in WMD, with focus on explosive and incendiary devices as terrorist weapons. The course includes classroom presentations that address potential terrorist targets in U.S. communities, common military and commercial explosives (available to terrorists), Improved Explosive Devices (IED’s), and response procedures that support safe and effective operations during bomb incidents.
