The Somerset County Cancer Coalition (SCCC),
established in 2004, is an outcome of the statewide initiative, New Jersey
Cancer Control Plan, and was given the charge to examine and collect county
level data on cancer incidence. To learn more about the NJDHSS Office of

Vision
Somerset County will be a New Jersey
leader in cancer control and the population committed to safe personal
practices and behaviors.
Mission
Through cancer advocacy, education,
community outreach and prevention efforts, reduce Somerset County cancer
deaths in the future. Our Three Main Goals to accomplish this task are
as follows:
Advocate for access to quality care for
all residents, particularly for the low-income and uninsured.

Strategy 1:
Identify and promote existing and new cancer patient resources.
Strategy 2: Continually assess and improve upon cancer
patient referral options.
Identify existing cancers earlier through improved
education, outreach and early detection.
Strategy 1:
Foster collaboration among healthcare providers, health departments, community
and faith based organizations, educational institutions, the business
community and others.
Strategy 2: Collaborators will advocate for and
promote cancer awareness, improve knowledge of cancer risks and the widespread
adoption of preventive health practices in Somerset County, with an emphasis
on minorities, low-income and the uninsured.
Goal #3
Provide cancer education and prevention instruction in
Somerset County.
Strategy 1:
Foster collaboration among educators, daycare and after school programs, youth
sports and summer camp programs, and school districts, and promote
age-appropriate formal instruction and learning activities.
Strategy 2: Engage employers, faith-based and
community organizations to promote cancer education and prevention instruction
for adults.
Activities
The SC
coalition continues to be on the move actively reaching a multitude of
community members. Outreach efforts during the last several months included
coordinating cancer education programs, screenings and serving as a resource
for referrals and responding to advocacy issues. Most recently, several skin
cancer awareness sessions were conducted for corporate employees throughout
the county reaching hundreds of people utilizing the dermaview skin analyzer
while providing one on one education on the importance of self exam and early
detection for skin cancer.

Many of our coalition members have taken advantage of our resources utilizing
literature, cancer education models and the dermaview for their own individual
community events.
